Overview

The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education was founded under the act of legislature called the Jammu & Kashmir Board of School Education Act 1975. The board is an autonomous body which looks after and administers school education in the state. The head of the board is a Chairman. The board has territorial authority all over the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The state government of Jammu and Kashmir gets advice from the board on matters concerning with academic guidance, prescribing the courses of study and conduct of examinations for Elementary, Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations, besides promotion of education for all.

The Jammu And Kashmir Board of SchoolEducation has two divisional offices situated at Rehari colony, Jammu and New Campus, Bye Pass Bemina, Srinagar.

Activities and Functions

The major activities and functions of the board are mentioned below:

A. To set down the course of instructions, prepare curricula and detailed syllabi; prescribe textbooks for elementary, secondary and higher secondary school examinations.

B. To administer examinations for different classes and courses at divisional levels after the expiry of the academic calendar which differs in the two divisions – Jammu Division and Kashmir Division as mentioned below:

2. Higher Secondary School Examinations Part II,
   
   
3. Diploma in Nursery Teacher Training Course,
   
   
4. Diploma in Elementary Education,
   
   
5. Provide adult education.
   
   

C. To publish the results of the examinations conducted by the Board and grant certificates / diploma to persons who have successfully passed the examination.

D. To identify the institutions for the idea of providing instructions in the Secondary and Higher secondary courses & to carry out inspection of the recognized schools.

E. To disaffiliate recognized school that does not fulfill the conditions laid down for recognition/affiliation.

F. To hold, control and administer the funds and property of the board.

G. To place before the Government the views of the board on any matter with which it is concerned.

H. Call for reports from Director/s of School education on the environment existing in the recognized institutions.

I. To take measures as the board may think necessary to raise the standard of education.

J. Institute and award medals and prizes for nurturing talent.

K. To exercise full academic control over the recognized institutions

L. Undertake editing, printing and publication of textbooks for different courses as the Board may prescribe from time to time.

M. Adopt measures for integrating national and state policies in Secondary, Higher Secondary, Technical and Vocational courses and for coordinating higher secondary education with the University Education.

N. Curriculum design and content.

O. Teacher support system & student support and guidance.

P. Provide assorted learning resources to schools.

Q. Do all such acts and things as may be necessary for furtherance of the objectives of the Board as a corporate body.
