Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission came into being on 27th of September 1957, under section 128 of the constitution of J&K. prior to this it was public service recruitment board, established on 31st December 1954, looking after the recruitment process of the state.
Major General Yadev Nath Singh PVC was the first Chairman of the commission. The Chairman and the member of the commission are appointed by the Governor for five years or till he attains the age of 65 years whichever is earlier
