Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences is famous in the northern region of India for treating cancer patients. The students who wish to take up medical sciences can take up a course in this institute. The university offering post graduate and post doctoral courses was established with the objective of providing education in clinical research and medical sciences. It was given the status of a deemed university in the year 1983 by Institute of Medical Sciences.

Apart from the above the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences also awards MBBS, BSc in MLT (Medical Lab Technology) degrees. Nurse training courses are also undertaken by the institute. Admission for MBBS is also done on the basis of Common Entrance Examination.
